Our Pastor

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!' " Isiah 6:8"

Mesfin clearly heard God’s calling in his life to full time ministry while in Rome, in 1991. In the Bible, God asked the prophet Isaiah “Who shall I call and who will go?” when he was preparing him for ministry. God impressed upon Mesfin’s heart a similar calling, which he humbly answered “I shall go" . While there, he served as an elder at Rome’s Ethiopian Evangelical Church for a period of two years. For an additional year, he served under the main Pastor in teaching, preaching the Word and Church administration..” Rome’s Ethiopian Evangelical Church ordained him and sent him out to teach. As an ordained minister, Pastor Mesfin has faithfully served all over Italy, in the cities of Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence, and Bologna.

In 2002, he moved to the United States. For the following four years, he served as a board member at All Nations Church in Kansas City, Kansas. He joined Bethel Evangelical Church in July 2006 as the main Pastor. Pastor Mesfin Tilaye is married to Aynalem (Nunu) Demessie. They are the parents of three boys: Abiye (Abitie) who is the oldest at 19 years old, followed by Samuel, 15 years old, and 7 year old Nathan.

Bethel's History

Bethel Ethiopian Evangelical Church (EEC) was born when a group of believers decided to gather every month for prayer and fasting. While their number was less than a dozen, they faithfully got together at one of their residences in Upper Manhattan in New York City. Their prayer topics were focused on the salvation of the souls, the furtherance of God’s kingdom throughout the world, and guidance from God as to how to take part in His work as immigrants in a foreign land. After a few years, the Holy Spirit directed them to start weekly meetings where they would engage in bible studies, sharing testimonies, prayer and worship. One couple living in the Bronx at the time volunteered their home to host these weekly meetings. This served as a good venue to engage other Ethiopians worshipping at various English-speaking Churches.

The fellowship continued to grow, and necessitated a more organized leadership. They selected a few God anointed people among themselves to run the affairs of the group. One particularly important need at the time was finding a central location for the weekly meetings, as the fellowship included members living all over New York City and New Jersey. By the foreknowledge of God, one of the members of the fellowship was attending Nyack Bible College, and was carrying the burden of the duties of Pastor for the group. Having graduated from Nyack Bible College, Gebre-Medhin Beyene was ordained as the first Pastor of Bethel Evangelical Church. The first official site of the Church was located in midtown Manhattan, where the congregation gathered for a mid-week program as well as Sunday services.

Pastor Gebre-Medhin served as a minister to the Bethel flock for close to two years. In 2003 he answered a call from God to start a ministry in the northern part of Ethiopia. He went with the blessings of Bethel EEC, and established “Hope Community Services” (More information on his ministry can be found at www.hope4ethiopia.org). Its dedicated elders ran Bethel EEC without a Pastor for a period of two years. In July of 2006, God directed the steps of another Pastor to Bethel. Pastor Mesfin Tilaye has been serving as the head Pastor ever since. (More on Pastor Mesfin on his biography page).

Bethel is indebted to many individuals who sacrificed greatly to ensure that the Church is where it is today. Although numerous to name, we would like to extend our thanks to a few individuals who opened up their hearts and homes to this ministry: Sirak and Emenet, and Woyezero Haregeweyn. We are grateful for all that you have done. GodBless.
